French hotel phrases for check-in

Start a French hotel check-in with Bonjour, j'ai une réservation au nom de Nora Silva, meaning "Hello, I have a reservation under the name Nora Silva". Replace the name with the one on your booking, then confirm the dates and room details before saying everything is correct.

A guest and receptionist compare a reservation confirmation at a hotel desk

Quick answer

Identify your existing reservation first. Listen separately for people, nights, departure date and beds. Ask whether breakfast is included in your room price before asking its hours. If one detail is unclear, ask about that detail or show your confirmation rather than agreeing to the whole booking.

Five phrases to begin at reception

Have the confirmation available before you start. The name identifies the reservation; it need not be the name of the person speaking. If your companion made the booking, use the name shown there. You are helping reception find an existing record, not asking to create another one.

Compare J'ai une réservation, "I have a reservation", with Je voudrais réserver une chambre, "I would like to book a room". Both are useful French, but they begin different conversations. Use the second only when you want to request a new booking. A longer sentence is not automatically a better opening.

Use respectful vous with the unfamiliar receptionist in these examples. Keep pouvez-vous or vous pouvez together rather than borrowing a tu verb form halfway through. The French tu and vous guide explains that choice without turning this arrival lesson into a pronoun drill.

Follow an arrival conversation with a bed mismatch

Nora and a travel companion arrive with a reservation for two people and two nights. They need separate beds. Read the exchange to find what reception has actually confirmed, not just whether everyone sounds polite. The booking details and service hours throughout the exercises are fictional.

Guest: Bonjour, j'ai une réservation au nom de Nora Silva. English: Hello, I have a reservation under the name Nora Silva. Receptionist: Oui, pour deux personnes, du douze au quatorze novembre ? English: Yes, for two people, from November twelfth to November fourteenth? Guest: Oui, pour deux nuits. English: Yes, for two nights.

Receptionist: Vous avez réservé une chambre avec un grand lit. English: You booked a room with one large bed. Guest: Est-ce qu'il serait possible d'avoir deux lits séparés ? English: Would it be possible to have two separate beds? Receptionist: Je vais vérifier. English: I will check. Guest: Merci. English: Thank you.

The guest confirms the dates but does not accept the bed arrangement. Je vais vérifier promises a check, not a successful change. Wait for the answer. If a different room is offered, ask about its price before agreeing. You have not established that a change is available or that the price will stay the same.

CCI's hotel-reception materials distinguish arrival and departure dates, guest count and room category. Their reservation dialogue also separates twin beds from one large bed. Those are separate details to confirm here, even when the first part of the booking is correct.13

Keep people, nights and dates separate

The word after combien tells you what to count. Pour combien de personnes ? means "For how many people?" Pour combien de nuits ? means "For how many nights?" If the booking is for two people and three nights, the answers are Pour deux personnes and Pour trois nuits. A correct number attached to the wrong noun still gives the wrong answer.

A departure date is different again. Vous partez le quatorze ? means "Are you leaving on the fourteenth?" Oui, le quatorze means "Yes, the fourteenth". It does not mean fourteen nights. Du douze au quatorze novembre means "From November twelfth to November fourteenth". In this exercise, that stay covers the nights of the twelfth and thirteenth.

You can make the dates explicit with Nous arrivons le douze novembre et nous partons le quatorze novembre, "We arrive on November twelfth and leave on November fourteenth". Point to the corresponding fields on the confirmation as you say them. This gives the receptionist a written reference if a number was unclear.

If the month has not been established, include it instead of assuming that le quatorze is enough. CCI's reservation lesson treats the booking period and its confirmation as information to establish with the client. The useful habit is to confirm your actual record, not memorize an exercise date.3

Ask for beds rather than guessing from guest count

Une chambre pour deux personnes means "A room for two people". That sentence tells you the intended occupancy, not by itself the bed arrangement. If separate beds matter, say deux lits séparés, "two separate beds". Un grand lit means "one large bed". The singular and plural are part of the information you need to hear.

You may encounter lits jumeaux, "twin beds", the term in CCI's example. You can still ask with deux lits séparés to make your request explicit. Do not agree to un grand lit because you recognized chambre and deux personnes earlier in the conversation.13

If the reply is Non, ce n'est pas possible, "No, that isn't possible", the request has not been granted. You can ask Quelles sont les autres possibilités ?, "What are the other options?" Then check what any proposed alternative means for your booking. Avoid treating a polite request as permission to assume a new arrangement.

For a correction, Nous ne souhaitons pas de grand lit means "We do not want a large bed". Add the positive request about separate beds so the receptionist knows what you need instead. The French negation guide helps you distinguish a plain negative from meanings such as nothing or no longer.

Ask two different questions about breakfast

Le petit déjeuner est compris dans le prix de ma chambre ? means "Is breakfast included in the price of my room?" This asks about your rate. À quelle heure est servi le petit déjeuner ? means "At what time is breakfast served?" This asks about the schedule. One answer does not necessarily supply the other.

Suppose reception replies Le petit déjeuner est servi de sept heures à dix heures, "Breakfast is served from seven to ten". You now have the example service hours, but you still do not know whether your room price includes breakfast. Follow with Est-ce qu'il est compris dans le prix de ma chambre ?, "Is it included in the price of my room?" Il refers to le petit déjeuner.

If the answer is Non, il est en supplément, "No, it costs extra", ask Je voudrais connaître le prix, s'il vous plaît, "I would like to know the price, please". Decide after hearing that answer. Do not infer a charge amount or assume that a breakfast room means breakfast is included.

CCI's reservation exercise presents room offers with breakfast included and others without it. That contrast supports checking the inclusion separately. Its sample rates are lesson details, not current prices to use for your trip.5

Recover the one detail you missed

A general Vous pouvez répéter, s'il vous plaît ?, "Could you repeat, please?", is a workable start. When you know which part is missing, name it. Vous pouvez répéter la date de départ, s'il vous plaît ? asks "Could you repeat the departure date, please?" This keeps the next reply focused on the date instead of restarting the whole booking.

For a written number, ask Vous pouvez me le montrer sur la confirmation ?, "Could you show it to me on the confirmation?" Use that when the number is already the subject of the conversation. If the problem is speed, Vous pouvez parler plus lentement, s'il vous plaît ? means "Could you speak more slowly, please?" Then check the missing detail again.

Do not answer Oui, c'est bien ça, "Yes, that's right", merely because a question has ended. Confirm only the detail you have understood. The listening-for-meaning guide gives you a way to set one listening question, such as whether breakfast is included, before replaying an exchange.

The same distinction helps before you reach the hotel. In the French train-announcement guide, a time and a track number answer different questions. At reception, a time and a breakfast-inclusion answer are equally different. In both cases, identify what the number or reply refers to before acting.

Choose the reply that solves the booking problem

For each task, choose your answer before reading the explanation. Both options are grammatical. The rejected option fails because it changes the intention or confirms the wrong detail. After checking, say the useful answer without looking, then add the next turn.

1. Find an existing booking

Your confirmation is under Nora Silva. Choose A, Bonjour, j'ai une réservation au nom de Nora Silva, "Hello, I have a reservation under the name Nora Silva", or B, Bonjour, je voudrais réserver une chambre, "Hello, I would like to book a room".

Choose A. B asks for a new booking rather than identifying the existing one. If reception asks Vous avez votre confirmation ?, "Do you have your confirmation?", reply Oui, la voici, "Yes, here it is". La refers to the feminine noun confirmation.

2. Answer the quantity requested

Your booking is for two people and three nights. Reception asks Pour combien de personnes ?, "For how many people?" Choose A, Pour trois nuits, "For three nights", or B, Pour deux personnes, "For two people".

Choose B. A supplies a true detail about this booking but answers a different question. Now reverse the order. If your partner asks Et pour combien de nuits ?, "And for how many nights?", answer Pour trois nuits. Listen for the noun instead of repeating the first number you remember.

3. Reject the wrong beds

You need separate beds. Reception says Vous avez réservé une chambre avec un grand lit, "You booked a room with one large bed". Choose A, Est-ce qu'il serait possible d'avoir deux lits séparés ?, "Would it be possible to have two separate beds?", or B, Oui, un grand lit, c'est parfait, "Yes, one large bed is perfect".

Choose A. B accepts the arrangement you do not want. If reception says Je vais vérifier, "I will check", your next step is to wait for the result, not mark the problem solved. In another round, let your partner refuse the change so you have to ask about alternatives.

4. Notice an unanswered inclusion question

Reception has said breakfast is served from seven to ten. You want to know whether it is included. Choose A, À quelle heure est servi le petit déjeuner ?, "At what time is breakfast served?", or B, Est-ce qu'il est compris dans le prix de ma chambre ?, "Is it included in the price of my room?".

Choose B. A repeats the schedule question and leaves the inclusion unresolved. If the answer is Non, il est en supplément, "No, it costs extra", ask the price before choosing. A useful reply must supply the missing information, not merely repeat the topic word breakfast.

5. Correct the departure date

Your arrival is November twelfth and your departure is November fourteenth. Reception asks Vous partez le douze ?, "Are you leaving on the twelfth?" Choose A, Non, le quatorze. Voici ma confirmation, "No, the fourteenth. Here is my confirmation", or B, Oui, le douze, "Yes, the twelfth".

Choose A. B accepts the arrival date as the departure date. If reception checks D'accord, du douze au quatorze novembre, "All right, from November twelfth to November fourteenth", you can now say Oui, c'est bien ça, "Yes, that's right". The confirmation supports your correction; you are not requesting extra nights.

Rehearse an arrival with one changed detail

Make a small booking card with a name, arrival date, departure date, guest count, bed arrangement and breakfast inclusion. Keep it visible for the first exchange. Ask a partner to play reception and deliberately change one detail when reading it back. Your task is to identify and correct that detail before accepting the booking.

On the next round, hide the model replies but keep the booking card. Change the order of the questions so that nights do not always follow people. Give breakfast hours without its inclusion status once, then reverse that pattern. You should ask for the missing answer rather than repeat a memorized sequence.

Finish by stating which details match and which still need an answer. If the beds are unresolved, do not describe the room change as confirmed. Keep the specific French question you needed for the next rehearsal. That question, rather than an entire memorized speech, is what you will need when the conversation takes an unexpected turn.

Common questions

What do I say when checking into a hotel in French?

Say Bonjour, j'ai une réservation au nom de Nora Silva, meaning "Hello, I have a reservation under the name Nora Silva". Replace the example name with the one on your confirmation. Then listen for the details reception reads back rather than starting a request for a new booking.

How do I ask for two separate beds?

Ask Est-ce qu'il serait possible d'avoir deux lits séparés ?, "Would it be possible to have two separate beds?" A room for two people does not by itself state the bed arrangement. The question requests a change or clarification; wait for reception to confirm availability and any price difference.

How do I ask whether breakfast is included?

Ask Est-ce que le petit déjeuner est compris dans le prix de ma chambre ?, "Is breakfast included in the price of my room?" Breakfast hours answer a different question. If it costs extra, ask the price before deciding whether to add it.

What if I do not understand the departure date?

Ask Vous pouvez répéter la date de départ, s'il vous plaît ?, "Could you repeat the departure date, please?" You can also show your confirmation and point to the date. Avoid saying that the booking is correct until you understand which date reception means.

Should I use tu or vous with the receptionist?

Use vous as a respectful starting point with an unfamiliar receptionist. The requests in this lesson keep that form consistently, including Vous pouvez répéter ?, "Could you repeat?" You do not need to change to tu to make a short question sound friendly.
