Learn French by answering out loud.

You might recognize a French phrase on the page and still hesitate to say it. Practice both parts with Yapkin: understand the exchange, then answer out loud with support when you need it.

Buying a train ticket

Your destination is Lyon. Tell the person at the ticket counter where you want to go.

The destination answers the first question, but you still have a ticket to arrange. Listen for what the next turn asks about. Here, it is the type of ticket, so repeating the city would leave the question unanswered.

Written practice example

Bonjour. Vous allez où ?

Hello. Where are you going?

Show a reply

À Lyon, s'il vous plaît.

To Lyon, please.

What you might hear next

Un aller simple ?

A one-way ticket?

What would you like to be able to say?

Give your practice a specific goal.

Make a polite request

Greet the person before asking for what you need. Rehearse a ticket purchase or a café order, including the question that follows your request.

Talk about your plans

Tell someone where you are going or what you want to do. Practice giving a short answer, then adding one detail when they ask.

Understand a spoken question

Listen for the information the speaker wants. A question about a destination needs a place; a question about a time needs a different kind of answer.

How to practice French

Listen before relying on the spelling

For a new phrase, play the lesson audio before reading every word. Check the meaning, listen again, and say the phrase out loud. Use the recording as your model instead of guessing the sound from the letters.

Keep your first reply short

A destination or a simple preference can be a complete answer in context. Once you can give that reply, practice a follow-up rather than making the first sentence longer and harder to remember.

Questions about learning French

Do I need to know French before using Yapkin?

You can begin with guided lessons and English support. Hear the phrase and check the meaning before trying to say it yourself. AI conversations give you another place to use what you have practiced.

Can I focus on listening as well as speaking?

Yes. Listening has its own exercises in Learn. You can practice understanding a spoken turn, then use speaking practice to work on your answer.

What should I do if I cannot answer in French?

Ask Yapkin for help in English. Try the suggested French reply, then continue the exchange. Revisit the missing word or phrase in a later practice session.
